Jul 28, 2026 - 2:04 PMDescription
Alias AutoStudio is the complete tier of Autodesk’s surfacing software — the tool automotive studios use to build Class-A surfaces that go straight to tooling. It sits well above general CAD in both capability and price, and this page explains what that buys.
What Class-A surfacing actually means
Class-A is a surface quality standard, not a marketing term. It describes surfaces where curvature flows continuously across every boundary, with no visible breaks in a reflection.
Park a car under strip lighting and watch the reflections run along the body. If they bend smoothly and continuously, that’s Class-A. If they kink or jump at a panel join, it isn’t — and on a production vehicle that’s a defect.
Why general CAD can’t do it
Most CAD packages build surfaces that are dimensionally correct and manufacturable. That’s sufficient for a bracket or a housing. It is not sufficient for a visible exterior panel.
Alias gives direct control over curvature continuity, surface tangency and the underlying control point structure. You are shaping the mathematics of the surface, not just its dimensions.
- Curvature continuity across surface boundaries, not just tangency
- Direct control point manipulation with continuity maintained
- Real-time reflection and curvature analysis while modeling
- Zebra striping, curvature combs and deviation checking
- Surface evaluation tools built for the standard, not bolted on
Automotive and industrial design
Alias is the standard in automotive exterior and interior surfacing. Most major manufacturers run it, and studio job postings routinely list it as a requirement.
Automotive design
Exterior body surfaces, interior trim, and the transition from a designer’s sketch to a surface set an engineering team can build from. Alias handles that handoff, which is where most CAD tools fail.
Transportation beyond cars
Motorcycles, marine, aerospace interiors and rail. Anywhere a visible surface has to look right and be manufacturable, the same requirements apply.
Consumer product design
Premium consumer goods where surface quality is part of the product’s appeal — appliances, audio equipment, high-end tools. The same surfacing discipline as automotive at a smaller scale.
Alias tiers — Concept, Surface and AutoStudio
Autodesk has sold Alias in tiers, and the naming causes confusion when people research the product.
| Tier | Built for | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Alias Concept | Sketching, concept modeling, early form exploration | Current – Available as a separate Autodesk product |
| Alias Surface | Class-A surfacing without the concept and visualization tools | Current – Available as a separate Autodesk product |
| Alias AutoStudio | Everything — concept through Class-A through visualization | Current, sold here |
| Alias Design | Former entry tier | Retired by Autodesk |
AutoStudio is the complete toolset. It contains everything in the lower tiers plus the automotive-specific tools, visualization and the full modeling range.
Which tier does the work you’re doing?
If you sketch concepts and hand them to a surfacing specialist, a lower tier may suffice. If you take a design from sketch through to a production-ready surface set, you need AutoStudio — the workflow spans everything the lower tiers split apart.
Alias AutoStudio price and terms
Autodesk sells Alias as a subscription only. There is no perpetual option.
| Term | Per seat | Effective cost per year | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | US$6,999 | US$6,999/year | Project-based work, or a first seat |
| 3 years | US$171,997 (3 × US$5,999) | US$5,999/year | Studios with continuous design programs |
| Autodesk direct — 1 year | US$19,135 | US$19,135 | — |
| Your saving | US$12,136 | US$12,136 | vs Autodesk list |
Alias sits at the top of Autodesk’s design range on price, which reflects a specialist tool with a small professional user base rather than mass-market software.
The 3-year term lowers the annual figure and fixes your rate. At this price point that hedge against Autodesk’s yearly increases is worth more than it is on cheaper products.
Single-user licensing
One subscription per designer. A named-user seat, not a device or studio license.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How many people per seat? | One named user |
| Can designers share a seat? | No |
| How many machines? | Almost 3 Devices, one active at a time |
| Reassignment when someone leaves? | Yes, through your Autodesk account |
| Studio of four designers? | Four seats |
| Network or floating licensing? | Discontinued by Autodesk |
The reassignment point matters in studios, where contract designers come and go between programs. Seats stay with the studio.
How Alias fits with the rest of a pipeline
Alias rarely works alone. It sits at the surfacing stage between concept and engineering.
| Stage | Typical tools | What moves forward |
|---|---|---|
| Concept sketching | Sketching software, Alias Concept tools | 2D sketches and rough form |
| Surfacing | Alias AutoStudio | Class-A surface set |
| Engineering | Inventor, CATIA, NX | Manufacturable geometry with structure |
| Visualization | VRED, 3ds Max | Presentation renders and reviews |
Surface data exports through IGES, STEP and Alias’s own formats into downstream engineering tools. Alias (.wire), STEP (.stp, .step), IGES (.igs, .iges), Parasolid (.x_t, .x_b), CATIA V5, JT (.jt), Siemens NX, Creo, DWG (.dwg), DXF (.dxf), OBJ (.obj), FBX (.fbx), STL (.stl), USD (.usd, .usda, .usdc).
What Autodesk Alias includes at this tier
- Full NURBS surface modeling with curvature control
- Sketching and concept modeling tools
- Dynamic and direct surface manipulation
- Real-time surface analysis and diagnostics
- Automotive-specific templates and workflows
- Visualization and rendering
- Data exchange with engineering CAD
- Updates released during your term
Considering alternatives?
The honest position: Alias is the industry standard for automotive Class-A, and studios choose it partly because everyone else has. Data moves between studios and suppliers who all run it.
Other surfacing tools exist and some are capable. The question is usually less about capability than about whether your clients, suppliers and prospective hires expect Alias. In automotive, they generally do.
If your work is product design rather than automotive, and Class-A isn’t a contractual requirement, general CAD with good surfacing may serve you at a fraction of the cost.

Graphics notes
A certified professional GPU is considerably more important for Autodesk Alias than for most traditional CAD applications. Real-time zebra striping, reflection analysis, curvature combs, and surface diagnostics rely heavily on graphics performance.
Although many consumer gaming graphics cards can run Alias, Autodesk recommends certified professional GPUs for the most stable behaviour and accurate visual analysis. If you're purchasing a workstation for automotive Class-A surfacing, always check Autodesk's Certified Hardware list before selecting a GPU.
A colour-accurate, calibrated display is also recommended. Surface quality in Alias is often evaluated by analysing reflections and highlights, so accurate colour and contrast reproduction helps ensure reliable design decisions.
FAQs
What is Alias AutoStudio used for?
Class-A surface modeling, primarily in automotive design. It's the tool studios use to take a concept through to production-ready exterior and interior surfaces that meet manufacturing surface-quality standards.
What is Class-A surfacing?
A surface quality standard where curvature flows continuously across every boundary with no visible breaks in a reflection. On a production vehicle body panel, a kink in the reflection is a defect. Alias gives direct control over the curvature continuity that produces it.
What's the difference between Alias Concept, Surface and AutoStudio?
Concept covers sketching and early form exploration. Surface covers Class-A surfacing without the concept and visualization tools. AutoStudio is the complete tier containing everything, plus automotive-specific workflows.
What happened to Alias Design?
Autodesk retired it. It was the former entry tier and is no longer sold. If you're researching it, AutoStudio is the current complete product.
How much does Alias AutoStudio cost?
$6,999 USD per seat annually, or $17,997 USD for three years. Autodesk's list price for the same annual term is $19,135 USD per year. It sits at the top of Autodesk's design range, reflecting a specialist professional tool.
Why is Alias so much more expensive than other CAD software?
Small professional user base and highly specialized capability. Class-A surfacing is a narrow discipline with a few thousand practitioners worldwide, so development costs spread across far fewer seats than mass-market CAD.
Does Alias run on Mac?
Current versions of Autodesk Alias AutoStudio (2025, 2026, and newer) are Windows-only. Autodesk's official system requirements list only:
- Windows 11 (64-bit)
- Windows 10 (64-bit, version 1809 or later)
Can't I do Class-A surfacing in regular CAD?
Not to the same standard. General CAD builds surfaces that are dimensionally correct and manufacturable, which suits internal components. Visible exterior panels need curvature continuity control and live surface analysis that general CAD doesn't provide.
What are the alternatives to Alias?
Other surfacing tools exist and some are capable. But Alias is the automotive industry standard, and studios choose it partly because their clients, suppliers and prospective hires all use it. If your work isn't automotive and Class-A isn't contractually required, cheaper CAD with good surfacing may serve you.
Do I need Alias if I'm doing product design?
Only if surface quality is central to the product. Premium consumer goods with visible curved surfaces benefit from it. Most product design doesn't need Class-A, and Fusion 360 or Inventor will cost a fraction as much.
How does Alias fit with engineering CAD?
It sits between concept and engineering. Surfaces export through IGES and STEP into Inventor, CATIA or NX, where structure and manufacturing detail get added. Alias produces the shape; engineering CAD makes it buildable.
Do I need a professional graphics card?
Strongly recommended. Real-time zebra striping and curvature analysis run constantly while you model, and consumer cards can render them inconsistently — which undermines the point of the software. Check Autodesk's certified hardware list.
Is there a perpetual license?
No. Autodesk stopped selling perpetual licenses in 2016. Anything advertised as a lifetime Alias license is either a legacy seat with no updates or support, or not genuine.
How many people can use one seat?
One named user. A studio with four designers needs four seats. Installation is permitted on 3 machines but only the assigned person may operate it.
Can I reassign a seat when a designer leaves?
Yes, through your Autodesk account. Seats stay with the studio, which matters when contract designers move between programs.
Can I install an older version?
Yes, through your Autodesk account. That matters when a client or supplier specifies which release surface data must be delivered in.
What happens when the subscription expires?
Alias stops launching and your files need an active subscription to open. Export surface data to IGES or STEP before expiry if you need the geometry accessible in other software.
Is Alias related to Maya?
Historically, yes — both came from Alias|Wavefront before Autodesk acquired the company. They're now entirely separate products for different disciplines. Maya is animation and VFX; Alias is industrial surfacing. If you're looking for Maya, that's a different product.
