Where Fusion 360 fits, and where it doesn’t
Fusion is cheaper and buyers ask about it constantly, so the honest comparison matters. Fusion suits small teams, cloud collaboration and integrated CAM on simpler products.
Inventor Professional suits large assemblies, established drawing standards, and shops with a decade of legacy IPT and IAM files that need to keep opening. Autodesk Inventor commercial rights on production work
This is the commercial license type. It permits paid, revenue-generating work with no cap on company size, contract value, or how the resulting parts are manufactured and sold.
Educational and personal licenses prohibit that, and the restriction follows the output rather than the software. A drawing produced on a student seat cannot be issued to a supplier, even if you later buy a commercial subscription.

The Inventor single user license model
Autodesk assigns each seat to one engineer by email address. The seat travels with the person, not the workstation — install it on a desk machine and a laptop, and sign in on whichever you are using.
Only one installation can be signed in at a time, so a design office needs a seat for every engineer who opens Inventor concurrently. Shared logins fail at sign-in rather than saving money.

Autodesk offers no small-company rate, so a four-person shop pays the same per seat as a manufacturer with two hundred. If your team also uses AutoCAD or Vault, price the Product Design & Manufacturing Collection first — Inventor Professional is included in it, and the arithmetic usually favors the collection at two products or more.
Inventor network license and floating seats
Autodesk has withdrawn network and multi-user licensing for Inventor. A floating pool served by a license manager is no longer available to new customers.
This changed the seat math for shops where Inventor was shared. A pool of four floating seats covering twelve occasional users becomes twelve named seats — count people, not simultaneous sessions, when you budget.
Subscription terms and release access
Inventor is subscription-only — Autodesk no longer issues perpetual licenses for it. Choose your term at purchase; longer terms lower the effective annual cost for identical software and identical rights.

Annual terms suit shops that scale up for a contract and back down after. Three-year terms suit permanent design staff and fix the cost across a product development cycle.
Why older releases still matter in manufacturing
We stock latest versions, and a live subscription includes the current release plus the three previous versions.
That matters here more than in most disciplines. Inventor files upgrade forward only, and a supplier or customer running an older release cannot open what you send from a newer one. Legacy tooling and fixture models also stay on the version they were validated in.
Check what your customers run before you standardize on the newest release. In a supply chain, the oldest version in use sets the version everyone else works to.

What limits Inventor in practice
- Assembly load and rebuild operations are largely single-threaded, so higher CPU clock speed generally delivers better modeling performance than simply adding more cores.
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Dynamic Simulation and some rendering tasks utilize multiple CPU cores, making high-core-count workstations beneficial for engineering analysis.
- For assemblies containing several thousand components, 32 GB RAM is the practical minimum, while 64 GB or more is recommended for large industrial machinery and plant design.
- Inventor benefits significantly from Autodesk Certified professional graphics cards, particularly NVIDIA RTX A-Series and AMD Radeon Pro GPUs, which provide optimized OpenGL and DirectX drivers for CAD workloads.
- Inventor is a Windows-only application. Autodesk does not support macOS, and running Inventor in unsupported virtual machines is not recommended for production use.
